Hailed by the press for his “full bodied lyric tenor” as well as for his “valiant high notes and perfectly
integrated lower register” British tenor Ted Black is rapidly emerging as one of the most distinctive
artistic voices of his generation. His performances are characterised by a refined musicianship,
poetic intelligence, and a luminous vocal presence that has attracted attention across both operatic
and recital stages.
A laureate of the Wiener Staatsoper’s Young Artist Programme, he appeared in over a hundred
performances there, in roles such as Rodrigo (Otello), Tebaldo (I Vespri Siciliani), the Young Lover (Il
Tabarro), and Ulrich Eißlinger (Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg). His recent operatic engagements
have included Ferrando (Così fan tutte), Lysander (A Midsummer Night’s Dream), and Walther von
der Vogelweide (Tannhäuser).
Equally celebrated as a recitalist, Black has appeared at venues including the Wigmore Hall, Musée
d’Orsay, Opéra de Lille, and the Oxford International Song Festival, earning acclaim for performances
distinguished by nuance, clarity, and emotional depth.
